His formative years were defined by an immersion into the most vital artistic currents of the early twentieth century. At the Art Students League, Davey honed his technical skills, eventually studying under Charles W. Hawthorne, whose emphasis on observation and tonal harmony left an indelible mark on Davey’s palette. However, it was his association with Robert Henri that profoundly shaped his creative soul. From Henri, Davey inherited a fascination with the human psyche and an insistence on exploring the emotional truth behind a subject, a principle that would later breathe life into his intimate portraits and spirited depictions of animals.

A Transformation in the High Desert

The year 1919 marked a transformative moment in Davey’s life when he relocated to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
