Born amidst the vibrant cultural currents of Ponce, Puerto Rico, in 1956, Poli Marichal emerged as a transformative force in contemporary Caribbean art. As the daughter of the esteemed painter Carlos Marichal, her artistic lineage is steeped in a profound dedication to visual storytelling. This heritage, however, did not merely provide a foundation; it served as a springboard for an extraordinary career that defies easy categorization. Marichal’s practice is a seamless weave of illustration, painting, printmaking, and experimental filmmaking, all unified by a singular, piercing gaze directed toward the complexities of the human condition.
Her artistic formation was a journey through some of the most significant creative hubs of her era. From the rigorous training at Escuela Massana in Barcelona to earning her Bachelor’s degree from the Escola de Artes Plásticas in San Juan, and ultimately achieving a Master’s degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Marichal cultivated a technical mastery that allowed her to traverse diverse media. This academic breadth enabled her to blend the raw energy of Expressionism with the delicate nuances of Symbolism, creating works where realism and fantasy converge to provoke deep introspection.
In the mid-1980s, Marichal embarked on a revolutionary path that would cement her legacy as a pioneer of Puerto Rican cinema. Utilizing the tactile, intimate medium of Super 8mm film, she crafted experimental works that functioned as visual poems, challenging the boundaries of conventional narrative. Her films were not merely moving images but were physical extensions of her printmaking and painting techniques—often involving hand-painting and scratching directly onto the film frames to evoke raw emotion.
