Born in Sofia, Bulgaria, on August 7th, 1943, Nikolai Maistorov is a towering figure in contemporary Bulgarian art, widely regarded as ‘the greatest contemporary Bulgarian expressionist’ by the esteemed art collector Svetlin Rusev. Maistorov’s formal training began at the Academy of Fine Arts ‘Nikolai Pavlovich’ in Sofia. He was awarded the 2nd Prize for an exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci in 1980, the Critics’ Prize for a solo painting exhibition in Sofia in 1984, and the Big Prize for Painting named after Vladimir Dimitrov the Master in 1987.
