          Upon returning to Sydney, Lewis found himself immersed in a burgeoning bohemian culture, studying under the legendary Julian Ashton. This period of discovery, marked by his early publications in The Bulletin, prepared him for a monumental shift in 1900, when he set sail for the United States.
