Born in London in 1948, Maria Chevska has spent her career navigating the delicate boundaries between the tangible and the ephemeral. Her artistic journey began at the Byam Shaw School of Art, where she honed a technical foundation that would later serve as the scaffolding for much more radical explorations. As her practice matured, Chevska moved beyond the traditional confines of the canvas, evolving into an artist who refuses to be tethered to a single medium. While she is foremost recognized as a painter, her work exists in a state of constant becoming, frequently blurring the lines between painting, sculpture, and installation. This fluidity allows her to inhabit the interstices between matter and meaning, creating works that feel less like static objects and more like living, breathing membranes.
The essence of Chevska’s practice lies in its profound engagement with language, memory, and the physical properties of her materials. Her work often enters into a deep, silent dialogue with poetry and literature, using text not merely as an ornament but as a structural element that informs the very weight of the art.
