Takura Kuwata’s blobs of color postulate mysteriously from dry clay bodies. In other pieces, the glaze surface hovers above the form, detaching from the clay (the ceramic term is “crawl”) to hang in space. The effect is beautiful and unsettling because the marriage between clay and glazes seems to be coming apart. His forms have grown ever looser and expressionistic while drawing from his training in the making of wares for Chanoyu, the traditional tea ceremony. He has taken this to a psychedelic realm. His love of color comes from a broad array of sources, but in particular, he cites the London Underground.
