Born Richard Iwan Ellis Roberts in May 1956 in Sarnau, Merionethshire, Wales, Iwan Bala is a prominent Welsh artist deeply rooted in the cultural landscape of his homeland. He was raised in Gwyddelwern, near Corwen, Denbighshire, and attended Ysgol y Berwyn comprehensive school in Bala. His academic journey began with studies in Geography and Politics at the University of Aberystwyth (1974), followed by a dedicated pursuit of Fine Art at Cardiff College of Art from 1975 to 1977. He further honed his skills, earning an MA in Fine Art from the University of Wales Institute Cardiff in 1993.
Bala’s artistic development is characterized by a unique approach to landscape and identity. His work often incorporates memorized and imagined maps, reflecting a deep connection to the Welsh terrain and its cultural narratives. While specific formal influences aren't widely documented, his exploration of place and memory suggests an affinity with artists who engage in similar thematic concerns. The rugged beauty of Wales itself serves as a primary influence, alongside a keen interest in Welsh history, language, and folklore.
Key themes within Bala’s oeuvre include Welsh culture, identity, landscape, memory, and the complexities of belonging. His style is often described as abstract expressionist, though it incorporates elements of assemblage and mixed media. He frequently employs a rich palette and layered textures to create evocative and emotionally resonant works. The use of maps – both real and imagined – is a recurring motif, symbolizing the artist’s attempt to chart not only physical space but also cultural and personal territories.
Iwan Bala’s contribution lies in his ability to articulate a distinctly Welsh artistic vision. His work engages with complex issues of national identity and cultural preservation, offering a powerful commentary on the relationship between place, memory, and belonging. He has inspired many artists through his unique style and commitment to exploring Welsh themes. His artworks are held in numerous public and private collections across Wales and beyond, ensuring his lasting legacy within the art world.
From 2007 to 2015, Bala served as a Senior Lecturer at the School of Creative Arts and Humanities at University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Carmarthen. In 2012, he collaborated with poet Menna Elfyn on an exhibition titled Field-notes, further demonstrating his interdisciplinary approach to artmaking.
