Born in France, Gaston Lachaise immigrated to the United States when he was 24 years old. He modeled “Woman (Elevation)” after Isabel Dutaud Nagle, whom he married in 1917, telling her, “I want to create a miracle with it . . . as great as you.” Although it definitely evokes his subject’s appearance, this sculpture represents Lachaise’s first full-scale expression of the idealized female form that would come to dominate his art. The figure’s long legs support a voluptuous torso that recalls ancient fertility goddesses and a disproportionally small waist that accentuates her ample hips and breasts. Modernists like Lachaise were fascinated by preclassical art because they believed it possessed a primitive vitality absent from later art forms.

Move to America and Relationship with Isabel Nagel

  • Meeting Isabel: Around 1902/1903 met and fell in love with Isabel Dutaud Nagle, an American woman of French Canadian descent.
  • Immigration: In 1906, after working for Lalique to pay for his passage, Lachaise immigrated to Boston, vowing to follow Isabel.

  • "Woman" as a Theme: His concept of "Woman" evolved into a central theme, representing vitality, fertility, and a force of nature based on Isabel's image.
  • Sculptural Characteristics: Lachaise’s nudes were known for their powerful forms, emphasizing breasts, abdomen, thighs, and buttocks with “a rounded voluminousness.”
  • Materials: Primarily worked in bronze.

Major Works and Recognition

  • Influence: His work influenced subsequent generations of sculptors with his emphasis on form, volume, and emotional expression.
