“The Flight into Egypt” by Cosmè Tura depicts a pivotal moment in Christian tradition – the Holy Family’s escape to Egypt following the warning from an angel about King Herod's intent to kill infant Jesus. This scene is drawn from the Gospel of Matthew, illustrating Mary riding a donkey with the Christ Child, accompanied by Joseph who leads the way. The artwork captures a sense of urgency and weariness as they journey through a desolate landscape, seeking refuge from persecution.
Tura’s style is characteristic of the Early Renaissance period, particularly within the Ferrarese School. He masterfully employs tempera on wood panel, a technique common during this era. The painting showcases Tura's innovative use of oil paint to render differing textures – note the detailed depiction of fabrics and Joseph’s red robe. His artistic style is marked by clear and sharp signs, decorative exuberance, and references to classical antiquity. Created around 1470, this artwork reflects the artistic climate of Ferrara under the Este court.
