The Life and Art of Maxime Dethomas
Maxime Dethomas was a French painter, draughtsman, printmaker, illustrator, and theater-set and costume designer. His artistic output included vigorous drawings and oil paintings featuring portraits, cafe scenes, and urban landscapes of Italy and Spain. He worked with various mediums, such as:
- Conté, graphite, charcoal, and pastel
- Watercolour and gouache
- Woodcut reproduction through a xylographic style
- Book illustrations for authors including Maurice Donnay and Octave Mirbeau
Theatrical Contributions and Associations

His work for the stage emphasized line and colour over painted detail. He also designed programmes, exhibition posters, and advertising posters.
He maintained close connections with several notable figures in the arts:
- Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec: A close friend and frequent companion.
- Ignacio Zuloaga: A fellow student and future brother-in-law.
