The Artistic Evolution of Jules Boulez
Jules Boulez was a Belgian painter and draftsperson born in Sint-Eloois-Vijve, Belgium. His early training began at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent from 1908 to 1910, where he pursued a vocation in acting. He later transitioned to the study of painting, training at Henri Charrier's studio in Paris between 1910 and 1912, followed by studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent from 1912 to 1914. During his time in Ghent, he was in contact with artists from the School of Laethem-Saint-Martin, including George Minne, and observed the career of Valerius De Saedeleer.
His body of work encompasses a variety of subjects, including landscapes, portraits, still lifes, and nudes. While his career was initially marked by late impressionism, his style evolved toward expressionism. He also produced works that were abstract and cubist. Boulez's artistic philosophy was centered on the idea that painting requires a complete commitment of both knowledge and spirit, as he sought to spiritualize matter through his art.
