He gained recognition for his work as a theatre designer, contributing to productions such as the ballet Façade and various films including The Private Life of Henry VIII, Rembrandt, and I Claudius. His decorative talents were further showcased through commissions for the Portman Square home of Samuel Courtauld and a frieze for a ballroom at 1 Kensington Palace Gardens.

Armstrong's oeuvre underwent significant stylistic shifts throughout his life. In the 1930s, he was noted for Surrealist works set within English landscapes, such as Dreaming Head, and he participated in the Unit One exhibition with semi-abstract paintings. During World War Two, he served as an official war artist for the War Artists' Advisory Committee, producing works like The Elms and A Farm in Wales that captured the reality of bomb damage to buildings. In his later years, his focus transitioned toward large symbolic works, including The Storm for the Festival of Britain and Victory, which imagined the aftermath of a nuclear attack.
