The Scottish Painter's Record
James Hall was a Scottish painter active during the first half of the nineteenth century. Born in 1797, his life and output are documented through archival records and specific surviving works. He died in 1854, leaving behind a body of work that reflects the regional artistic output of his era. His presence in the historical record is confirmed by the National Archives and various museum collections.
His technical contribution is anchored by specific pieces such as 'Show Jamie', painted in 1842. This work exists within the collections of Museums & Galleries Edinburgh, providing a tangible link to his practice. The survival of such works allows for a direct assessment of his ability to capture subject matter within the constraints of mid-century Scottish painting.

- The Museums & Galleries Edinburgh, which holds his 1842 work.
- The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, which provides a biographical framework for his life from 1797 to 1854.
