Nell’autunno 1957 Manzoni realizza i primi Achromes, tele imbevute di un impasto rigorosamente bianco di gesso e caolino lasciate essiccare, così che nel processo di asciugatura, e senza alcun intervento, l’opera assume il suo specifico aspetto di superficie piegata e grinzata. Con gli Achromes Manzoni annulla il gesto informale e il coinvolgimento esistenziale dell’artista al fatto pittorico. Allontana dalla tela l’accidente dell’immagine, fa tabula rasa per attingere al grado zero. Come scrive Germano Celant, l’Achrome è “una superficie desertica che non riverbera alcunché di carnale”, dove la materia supera la propria dimensione autre e viene indagata in quanto entità fisica “che esibisce le proprie leggi di puro significante”. Il bianco è un non colore: “un bianco che non è un paesaggio polare, una materia evocatrice o una bella materia, una sensazione o un simbolo o altro ancora: una superficie bianca che è una superficie bianca e basta” – spiega Manzoni sulle pagine di Azimuth (n. 2, 1960), la rivista da lui fondata nel 1959 assieme a Enrico Castellani e Vincenzo Agnetti (uscita in due soli numeri), in concomitanza con l’apertura della galleria Azimut, allo scopo di promuovere e presentare le esperienze più radicali oltre l’informale. Alla base di tali ricerche si deve certamente individuare l’opera di Fontana, cui sarà dedicato proprio lo scritto d’apertura del primo numero di “Azimuth”. Inoltre, un imput decisivo per i giovani artisti gravitanti nell’ambiente artistico milanese orientati a esplorare una nuova concezione linguistica proviene dalla mostra 11 proposizioni monocrome di Yves Klein, tenutasi nel gennaio 1957 alla Galleria Apollinaire, che Manzoni visita più volte. Ulteriori stimoli, prontamente colti e subito rielaborati da Manzoni nella propria ricerca monocroma possono derivare inoltre dalla visione dell’opera di Burri come pure delle coeve bende monocrome di Scarpitta.
