A pivotal moment occurred at the age of twelve, when a severe motor-sculpture crash on the island of Elba necessitated emergency surgery performed without anesthesia. This period of long convalescence became a crucible for his creativity, leading him to immerse himself in the study of visual art and photography—disciplines that would eventually provide the foundation for his explorations of perception and reality.
His academic path was as rigorous as his later performances. Burden pursued a multidisciplinary education, earning a B.A. in visual arts, physics, and architecture from Pomona College before obtaining his MFA from the University of California, Irvine.
