Louis Gallait: A Revival of History Painting in Belgium

Louis Gallait (1810 – 1887) stands as a pivotal figure in Belgian art history, largely credited with spearheading a resurgence of grand historical painting within the nation. Born in Tournai, Hainaut, his early life was marked by modest circumstances but fueled by an unwavering passion for artistic pursuits. He commenced his formal training at the Académie Royale de Tournai under Cornelis Cels and Philippe Auguste Hennequin, establishing a foundation for his future endeavors.
