Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Munich, Germany, on October 24, 1819, Josef Resch entered a world shaped by the musical traditions of his city. He was the son of a Stadtmusikus, a local city musician, which suggests a household where the arts were a constant presence. This early environment likely provided a foundation for his later pursuits in visual expression.
The trajectory of his life took a formal turn in the mid-1830s. At the age of 16, on November 16, 1835, Resch began his professional training in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. This period of study provided the technical grounding necessary for a career that would eventually span various mediums, including lithography and portraiture. He remained connected to his birthplace throughout his life, eventually passing away in Munich on April 19, 1901.
Artistic Techniques and Subject Matter
Resch’s practice was defined by a versatile command of various media, moving between the precision of lithography and the fluidity of watercolor . He was a painter and lithographer who found equal footing in the delicate application of chalk and the sharp, observational lines of pencil . His technical range allowed him to transition from the formal requirements of portraiture to the more spontaneous demands of caricature. This adaptability was particularly evident in his contributions to Fliegende Blätter , where his illustrations met the public eye.
His subject matter often leaned toward the observational and the social. He possessed a keen eye for the character of his subjects, whether through formal portraits or through the satirical lens of caricature. In Munich, he became noted for his lithographic depictions of Richard Wagner’s activities, capturing the cultural movements of the era with a sharp, illustrative hand. These works provided a visual commentary on the social and artistic life of the city.
Beyond the social sphere, Resch turned his attention to genre scenes and quiet, domestic moments. His pencil drawings often captured the stillness of everyday life , such as a scene depicting two men engaged in conversation within a peasant room. These works relied on fine outlines and detailed internal drawing to establish the atmosphere of a simple interior. His output was diverse, ranging from these intimate genre studies to the more structured demands of portraiture.
Notable Works and Subjects
Resch’s hand was as adept at capturing the essence of a person as it was at documenting the shifting light of a landscape. His portraiture moved through various social spheres, from the intimate to the royal. He rendered the likeness of Rosa Kastner, a pianist from Vienna, and captured the presence of Friedrich Haase, a court actor in Bavaria. In a notable depiction of Bavarian royalty, he portrayed King Maximilian II in civilian attire, shown with the Queen at his arm.
His interest in the public life of Munich often manifested through a sharper, more satirical lens. In 1868, he turned his attention to the cultural atmosphere of the city by creating caricatures of Richard Wagner’s activities. These works provided a pointed look at the composer's influence during that period. Beyond the social and political, his sketches and watercolors captured specific moments of stillness and urban life , such as a watercolor of the marketplace in Peschiera from 1854 and a pencil drawing of the Isartor in Munich in 1881.
Where to See His Works Today
The physical remnants of Resch's career are scattered across various institutional collections, reflecting the diverse nature of his output. His satirical side is preserved within the König-Ludwig-II.-Museum, which holds his caricatures of Richard Wagner's activities in Munich. These works offer a glimpse into the social and cultural atmosphere of the era through his specific lens of observation.
His more formal studies and landscapes find their way into municipal and state repositories. The Sternwarte in Bogenhausen, captured in a 1868 drawing, remains part of the Sammlung Proebst within the Münchner Stadtmuseum . Meanwhile, his depiction of St. Stephansmünster in Alt-Breisach is held by the Rathaus Breisach am Rhein. For those interested in his portraiture, the Bavarian State Painting Collections house his work titled Der Maler Moritz Müller.
