A Life Between Two Worlds
Born in Stockholm, Sweden, Arvid Nyholm began his path through the arts with a focus on architecture at the Royal Polytechnic School. This early training in structure and form would later inform the precision of his brushwork, though his true calling emerged when he turned toward the canvas. He moved from the rigid lines of design to the fluid world of the studio, studying under Andreas Johan Brolin and later receiving private instruction from Gösta Krehl. By the time he entered the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, his trajectory was set toward a life of visual storytelling.
The pull of the unknown eventually led him away from his native shores. After a period of study at the Konstnärsförbund under Anders Zorn , he made the decision to emigrate to America in the late nineteenth century. He first sought his fortune in New York before eventually settling in Chicago. This transition from the Swedish landscape to the bustling American urbanity shaped his perspective, allowing him to bridge the gap between his European training and the evolving spirit of his new home.
The Art of the Individual
Nyholm found his greatest success in the quiet, intense study of the human face. He possessed a particular talent for capturing the essence of those who held influence, earning commissions that placed his work in significant public and private collections. His ability to render character made him a sought-after portraitist for men of industry and politics alike. His repertoire included:
The portrait of John Ericsson for the National Gallery.
A likeness of Governor A. O. Eberhart for the State Capitol of St. Paul.
The portrait of Senator Cummins for the Iowa Historical Society.
A depiction of the industrialist Ogden Armour.
Beyond the formal portrait , he explored the textures of the natural world. He worked with oils and watercolors to capture landscapes, and he applied his skill to the delicate medium of etching . His graphic works allowed him to experiment with light and shadow in ways that his more structured portraits did not permit.
Legacy and Recognition
His commitment to the artistic community extended beyond his own easel. He was an active participant in the social fabric of the art world, helping to found the Swedish-America Art Association in 1905. This involvement ensured that the cultural ties between his birth country and his adopted home remained strong. His work was frequently featured in exhibitions that celebrated this specific cultural connection, both in Sweden and across the Atlantic.
The permanence of his contribution is found in the institutions that hold his work today. His paintings and prints reside in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and various museums throughout the United States. Through his portraits and his landscapes, he left a record of the people and places that defined his era.
