The Scholar of Wuzhong Zhu Zhishan lived through the middle years of the Ming Dynasty, moving between the administrative duties of a magistrate and the quiet rhythms of a scholar. Born in Changzhou, within the region of today’s Suzhou, his life was shaped by the expectations of the imperial examination system.
