Teddy Cobeña Loor, born on April 16, 1973, in Portoviejo, Ecuador, is a distinguished figurative expressionist sculptor with a notable surrealist component. He is the son of David Cobeña Vinces, a hypnotherapist, and Judith Loor Rodríguez, a fine arts teacher. From a young age, he displayed an interest in anatomy, fueled by a biography of Leonardo da Vinci found within his family’s library.
Cobeña Loor initially embarked on medical studies in Guayaquil before relocating to Barcelona, Spain. There, he completed his formation as a radiologist and specialist in preventive medicine. Simultaneously, he pursued formal training in sculpture at the Massana School, the Barcelona Academy of Art, and the Florence Academy of Art.
Cobeña Loor’s artistic journey began with a foundation in medical knowledge, which deeply informs his understanding of human anatomy. His early sculptural work was significantly influenced by the classical style of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, known for his dynamic and expressive figures. Later, he embraced the dreamlike imagery and unconventional forms characteristic of Salvador Dalí’s surrealism.
He skillfully combines these influences, resulting in a unique style that blends figurative representation with elements of fantasy and psychological depth. His sculptures often explore themes of anatomy, dreams, and what he terms “sensorrealism” – the positive sensations evoked by experiencing art through sight, touch, or sound.
One of Cobeña Loor’s most recognized works is his bronze sculpture, "The Dreams", which has been permanently installed in the Palazzo Panciatichi in Florence, Italy, since June 2013. This piece exemplifies his ability to capture complex emotions and narratives within a three-dimensional form.
