This sculpture is one of a series that Nicola Durvasula made as homages and reprisals of modernist masterpieces. Kinetic Sculpture remakes Naum Gabo’s work, Kinetic Construction (Standing Wave) (1919-20). In Gabo’s sculpture, a metal rod mounted on a pedestal vibrates and a line turns into a form that occupies space.Durvasula’s sculpture replaces the upright metal rod with the consumable, ephemeral and culturally marked agarbatti or incense stick. In Durvasula’s piece, the viewer is expected to insert an agarbatti into the stand and light it, as one would in the daily ritual of puja, and then press the switch that will make it vibrate. Unlike Gabo’s uniform metal rod, the aggarbatti has a glowing tip, which describes a visually compelling arc.Translating Gabo’s sculpture into local material, Durvasula creeps into modernism’s masculine terrain, occupies it, and fills it with perfume.

Nicola Durvasula: Bridging East and West Through Sensory Exploration

Nicola Durvasula’s artistic journey began in Jersey, United Kingdom, where she cultivated her foundational skills at the École des Beaux Arts du Havre before furthering her studies at Kent Institute of Art and Design. This formative exposure to diverse artistic traditions would prove instrumental in shaping her distinctive approach – one characterized by a profound fascination with blending Eastern philosophies and Western techniques into captivating visual narratives. Her unwavering belief is that art can transcend cultural boundaries, fostering understanding and prompting contemplation about shared human experience. Her nomadic lifestyle has traversed continents, from France’s vibrant cultural tapestry to India's spiritual epicenter and ultimately establishing her presence in the United States. These immersive encounters instilled within Durvasula an unyielding dedication to exploring intersections between cultures, translating these observations into evocative artworks that resonate with layered meanings. She skillfully combines sculptural explorations with musical collaborations—most notably “Practice Pieces”—a deliberate juxtaposition designed to stimulate reflection on temporal passage and the lingering echoes of forgotten spaces. This collaborative spirit underscores her conviction that artistic dialogue elevates our perception of reality. Durvasula’s artistic repertoire encompasses painting, sculpture, and installation, demonstrating a remarkable versatility that mirrors her intellectual curiosity and desire to engage with intricate conceptual frameworks. Her paintings often draw inspiration from Hindu iconography, meticulously recreating sacred imagery while simultaneously experimenting with innovative textural surfaces—a testament to her ability to honor tradition while embracing experimentation. She seeks to communicate profound spiritual truths through visual language, mirroring the contemplative traditions of Eastern philosophy. Her sculptures stand apart for their kinetic qualities – pieces that appear to pulsate with subtle movement, mirroring the dynamism inherent in natural phenomena and capturing fleeting moments of beauty. These works represent a significant departure from conventional sculptural forms, reflecting Durvasula’s commitment to challenging artistic conventions and exploring new avenues for expressive communication. The artist's meticulous attention to detail ensures that each sculpture embodies both precision and an underlying sense of organic vitality. Durvasula’s accomplishments have garnered international acclaim through numerous solo exhibitions across prestigious galleries and museums globally. Her contributions to contemporary art are distinguished by her willingness to embrace unconventional mediums and conceptual approaches—a characteristic that distinguishes her from many of her contemporaries. She continues to push artistic boundaries, fostering dialogue between disparate cultural perspectives and enriching the artistic landscape with pieces that transcend geographical limitations. Nicola Durvasula’s legacy resides in her ability to articulate complex ideas through sensory experiences, securing her place as a pivotal voice within the realm of modern art.
