Born in Cork, Ireland, Nathaniel Grogan was originally an apprentice to his father, a turner and block maker. Despite his father's discouragement, he taught himself to draw, beginning his artistic journey with chalk on board. He eventually trained under the local painter John Butts. His life took him far from his home in Cork; he enlisted in the British army and served in America during the War of Independence and in the West Indies. During his time in America, advertisements offered his services for sign and ornamental painting. Upon returning to Ireland, he decorated the walls, doors, and ceilings of Mount Vernon for Mr Lane. He eventually settled on the south side of the Mardyke in Cork, where he died and was buried at the church of Saint Finnbarr.
Grogan was a painter known for producing numerous oil and watercolour paintings, specifically landscapes and genre scenes of his native Cork. His work often depicted Irish peasant life, a subject noted for its depiction of social life in the lower classes. His repertoire included etchings, such as a set of 12 views of Cork in mezzotint, and an engraving of a portrait of Catherine Fitzgerald, countess of Desmond. He exhibited landscapes with the Free Society of Artists in London in 1782. His sons, Nathaniel and Joseph, also became painters and were known for making copies of his works.
