The Life and Legacy of Xu Ben
Xu Ben was a Chinese painter, writer, and poet active during the Ming dynasty. Born in Changzhou, he was recognized as one of the Ten Talents of Suzhou during the early Ming period. His life was marked by significant political upheaval; in 1374, he was called to the imperial court by the Hongwu Emperor and appointed as the governor of Henan province. However, following a conspiracy, he met his end in prison.
His artistic output is characterized by his engagement with the landscape traditions of the Yuan masters, specifically following the styles of Wang Meng and Ni Zan. His works often focus on the interplay of mountains and water, capturing the essence of the natural world through ink on paper.
