The Life and Versatility of Hieronymus Francken II
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Hieronymus Francken II was a prolific Flemish painter and a prominent member of the large Francken family of artists. The son of Elisabeth Mertens and Frans Francken the Elder, he received his initial training from his father. He was entered into the books of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1605 as a pupil of his uncle, Ambrosius, and was formally admitted as a master of the Guild in 1607. It is likely that he spent time in Paris, where he may have studied under his uncle Hieronymus Francken I. Returning to Antwerp, he spent the remainder of his career there, serving as a consultor and prefect for the Sodality of the Unmarried Men of Age, a fraternity established by the Jesuit order.
As a versatile artist, Hieronymus II practiced in many genres, including:

One such signed still life is Still life with pottery, herring and pancakes, and another is The Cabinet of an Art Lover, dated 1621.
