The Workshop in Veringenstadt

In the early sixteenth century, the quiet landscape of Swabia was home to a family of creators whose hands shaped the spiritual life of the region. Hans Strüb was born into this tradition, part of a lineage of painters documented in Veringenstadt near Sigmaringen. He was the son of Peter Strüb the Elder, a man who had already established a presence as a painter. Growing up within the walls of a family workshop, Hans learned the physical demands of his craft through the guidance of his father. By 1505, records show him working as an independent master, a step that marked his transition from a student of the family trade to a creator in his own right.

Hans did not work in isolation. He was part of a close-knit group of brothers, including Jakob and the younger Pieter, who shared the burden and the skill of the family business. Together, they navigated the complexities of commissions and the technical requirements of their era. Their work was deeply tied to the religious life of the time, often involving the creation of large-scale, carved wooden altarpieces that would have occupied the central spaces of local churches.

Crafting the Sacred

The work of Hans Strüb was characterized by a specific kind of energy. While his brother Jakob was often associated with a more conservative approach, Hans was noted for a style that felt more vigorous and spirited. His hands were skilled not only in the application of pigment but likely in the very carving of the wood that formed the foundation of his altarpieces. This dual capability allowed him to design the sculptural elements of an ensemble, ensuring that the painted scenes and the carved figures spoke to one another in a unified language.

His artistic output is defined by several key characteristics:

  • A focus on large-format, carved wooden altarpieces.
  • A tendency toward stylized faces and bony, expressive hands.
  • An energetic and vigorous approach to composition.
  • The ability to integrate painting with sculptural design.

Much of what we understand about his hand comes from the fragments of larger works that were eventually dismantled. One such example is a series of panels that were once part of a grand altarpiece in the Augustinian monastery at Inzigkofen. These pieces, which were later separated and distributed, show the influence of contemporary masters like Bernhard Strigel and Bartholomäus Zeitblom. Through these remnants, we see a man working within a specific visual language, one that utilized low-topped arches and foliate elements to frame the sacred stories he was tasked to tell.

A Legacy in Wood and Paint

Though many of the large-scale works Hans Strüb created have been broken up or lost to time, his presence in the history of Swabian art remains clear. He was a man of his time, a craftsman who translated the theological needs of his community into physical, tangible objects. His work helped define the visual atmosphere of the early 1500s in Germany, contributing to a tradition of craftsmanship that blended the boundaries between the painter's brush and the sculptor's chisel.
