The Brush and the Pulpit
Norristown, Pennsylvania, provides the starting point for a life defined by dual vocations. Born in 1886, H. Willard Ortlip moves from the quietude of his birthplace toward the rigorous training of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. By 1902, he is already immersed in the technical demands of his craft, studying under the guidance of William Merritt Chase, Sargeant Kendall, Hugh Breckenridge, and Henry McCarter. His talent is recognized early through two Cresson scholarships, which pull him away from the familiar and into the broader landscape of international study.
The studio becomes a central setting in his life. In 1910, he marries Aimee Eschner, a fellow art student, and the two establish a workspace in Philadelphia’s Independence Square. This period marks his rise as a society portrait painter. His hand is not confined to canvas alone; it moves to the pages of mass media, crafting covers for Collier’s magazine, The Literary Digest, and The Christian Herald. His work bridges the gap between private portraiture and the public eye of New York City and Philadelphia.
A Narrative of Redemption
A shift occurs as the artist’s focus moves from the social elite to the spiritual. Ortlip becomes a Methodist lay preacher, a role that merges his visual skill with his oratorical voice. He does not merely speak; he illustrates. In the crowded spaces of Broadway, he uses chalk illustrations to communicate religious narratives to passing crowds. This method of visual preaching follows him across borders, as he travels to Japan and Haiti to share his message.
The culmination of this spiritual and artistic convergence is found in a massive undertaking. In 1960, Ortlip completes Redemption, a 160-foot religious mural. It hangs in the foyer of the John and Charles Wesley Chapel at Houghton University. This was a collaborative effort of scale and devotion, painted alongside his wife, Aimée E. Ortlip, and mounted with the physical assistance of his son, Paul D. Ortlip. The mural remains a permanent fixture of the institution where he would later serve as an associate professor of portrait painting.
Legacy in the Classroom and Beyond
The final decades of his life are spent within the academic halls of Houghton University. After retiring from his professorship in 1957, his presence remains tied to the institution that honors his family through the Ortlip Gallery. His life concludes in 1964 in Houghton, leaving behind a lineage of artists and educators, including his sons Willard, Henry, Stephen, and Paul, and his daughters Aileen, Marjorie, and Ruth.
