The Early Rhythms of a Rio Artist
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1919, Edgard Cognat began his life with a musical inclination that would eventually give way to a visual one. As a child, he found his way to the violin, studying the instrument under his father's guidance. By the age of sixteen, he realized his true calling lay elsewhere. He traded the strings of the violin for the precision of drawing, a decision that would define his trajectory in the Brazilian art scene.
His formal training began at seventeen when he joined the "Belas Artes" course in Rio. Under the direction of Professor Carlos Chambelland, Cognat immersed himself in the study of drawing, painting, and decorative art. He looked toward the technical rigor of European masters, absorbing the methods of Rembrandt, Rubens, and Dürer. This period of study was not limited to the canvas; he sought to master the physical properties of his medium through various experimental techniques:
This technical versatility allowed him to move beyond simple representation, seeking a deeper understanding of how light and texture interact with different surfaces.
War and Recognition
The course of Cognat's life was interrupted by the global upheaval of World War II. He was called by the Brazilian Army to serve in Italy as a member of the "FEB." This two-year period of military service in Europe provided a stark contrast to his studio life in Brazil. Upon his return to Rio de Janeiro in 1945, he resumed his artistic pursuits with a renewed sense of purpose, quickly earning recognition in the national exhibitions of the time.
His work during this era was marked by significant accolades. He received a "Menção Honrosa" in painting and a "Medalha de Bronze" in drawing at the "Salão Nacional de Belas Artes." Later, his ability to capture industrial and social themes was highlighted by his "Medalha de Ouro" for the painting "Indústria do Vidro," a large-scale work measuring 2,30m x 1,90m that depicted the fabrication of glass in Brazil's first factory of its kind. His success continued through the mid-1950s, including a "Medalha de Prata" awarded during an exposition by the Brazilian "Casa da Moeda."
A Transnational Presence
Cognat's influence extended well beyond the borders of Brazil. His work traveled to Argentina, where he exhibited at the "Salão Ramos Mejia" and secured several awards. His presence was also felt in Portugal and Italy, the latter of which offered him a unique opportunity to serve as a replacement for Professor Carlos Oswald at the "Ossevartorio Cristiano" in Assis. This international exposure solidified his reputation as a painter and sculptor capable of communicating through a universal visual language.
His later works often carried a sense of spiritual or historical weight. One notable piece, "São Francisco de Paula Walking on the Waves," dated from 1973, remains a significant part of his output. Whether through his depictions of industrial progress or his more contemplative subjects, Cognat maintained a commitment to the craft he had begun in the studios of Rio de Janeiro, until his death in 1994.
