Early Life and Artistic Training
Dieter Stöver was born on May 8, 1922, in Oldenburg, Germany. His early years were shaped by the academic environment of the Staatliches Gymnasium in Oldenburg, where he completed his Abitur in 1941. This period of formal schooling was quickly interrupted by the realities of the era, as he entered military service in 1941. He remained in the military until 1945, a time that would have profoundly influenced the perspective of any young man living through those years.
Once the war ended, Stöver turned his attention toward his creative development. Between 1947 and 1949, he studied at the Städerschule in Frankfurt. This period of study provided a foundation for the technical skills he would refine throughout his life. His pursuit of art led him to further training at the Hochschule der bildenden Künste in Hamburg around 1950.
The final stage of his formal education took place in Munich. From 1950 to 1954, he was a student at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste. This intensive period of study in Munich helped shape the painter he would become, moving him from the structured classroom settings of his youth into the professional world of German art.
Notable Artworks and Exhibitions
Stöver’s output during the middle decades of the twentieth century reveals a steady engagement with varied textures and mediums. In 1964, he produced ohne Titel, a work utilizing mixed media on paper. By the late sixties, his experimentation continued with Strümpfe, created in 1969 using mixed media on linen. These works reflect a period of technical exploration that preceded his later, more expansive compositions.
His later years saw a shift toward different surfaces and more structured color studies. In 1972, he produced Roter Acker as an original serigraph based on one of his paintings. This was followed by Lavendelfeld in der Provence in 1976, a piece painted with oil on burlap on canvas. This specific work was later featured in an exhibition at the Frankfurter Kunstkabinett Hanna Bekker vom Rath in Frankfurt am Main in May 1977.
Later Years and Death
In the final years of his life, Dieter Stöver continued to work as a painter, maintaining the creative path he had established through his studies in Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Munich. His presence in the German art scene remained steady as he moved through the decades following his formal education and military service. His work during this period reflected a life spent observing the nuances of color and form, often finding inspiration in the landscapes of Europe.
The artist eventually passed away in 1984 in Schlegldorf/Lenggries. He left behind a body of work that captured specific moments and places, such as the fields of Provence, through various techniques including oil on burlap and serigraphy. His death marked the end of a long career that began in Oldenburg, leaving a legacy of visual records that continue to be studied by those interested in mid-century German painting.
