Early Life, Family and Training

Amélie Legrand de Saint-Aubin was born on 19 October 1797 in Paris, specifically in the rue d'Enfer within the Île de la Cité. She was the eldest daughter of Pierre Jean Hilaire Legrand and Denise Marie Claudine Legrand. Her upbringing was rooted in this specific corner of the city, where her family lived during the turn of the century.

Her path toward painting began through formal study. During the 1810s, she trained under Charles Meynier. This period of instruction provided the foundation for her technical development and her later presence in the Parisian art scene. She moved from the domestic sphere of her family into the structured environment of a studio, learning the discipline required for the portraits and historical scenes she would later produce.

Exhibitions and Artistic Career

Her presence at the Paris Salon began in 1819. Over the following decades, she returned to the exhibition nearly thirty times, sending works to the Salon until 1850. These contributions were not limited to a single subject; she brought a variety of scenes to the public eye, including portraits, religious compositions, and history paintings. Her career saw her participate in 17 Salons in total.

The paintings she submitted reflected a steady commitment to the formal genres of the time. She moved between the quietude of religious scenes and the more structured requirements of history painting. Her portraits also formed a significant part of her output during these years. Through these works, she maintained a consistent presence within the French art scene for over three decades.

Workshop and Artistic Circle

The workshop where she practiced was situated at the Sorbonne. It was a space shared with other women who pursued the same craft. Within these walls, she worked alongside Louise Hersent, Aimée Brune-Pagès, and Jenny Larivière. These women occupied the same professional space, navigating the requirements of the era through their shared presence in the studio.

The atmosphere of the workshop was defined by this collective activity. Working in such proximity to Hersent, Brune-Pagès, and Larivière meant that the daily rhythms of painting were a shared experience. They moved through the same technical challenges and professional expectations, their lives and methods overlapping in the quiet, focused environment of the Sorbonne.

Notable Works and Acquisitions

Her brush captured many faces and quiet spaces, including Portrait of René Caillié and Studio's interior. These works reflect a steady hand and an eye for the specific details of her subjects' lives. She focused on the way light and shadow settled in a room or on a sitter, moving through the themes of religious scenes and history paintings that she brought to the Salon over several decades.

A significant piece from 1831, Portrait of an Artist Drawing a Landscape in her Sketchbook, was acquired by the AGO Toronto. This painting places a woman within the act of creation, following a tradition where female painters depicted women engaged in their own artistic practice. It offers a glimpse into the quiet, focused habits of a woman at work, looking closely at the tools and the movement of drawing.

Later Years and Death

Amélie Legrand de Saint-Aubin lived until the age of 80. She passed away on 3 October 1878, in her home located in the 5th arrondissement of Paris. She remained unmarried throughout her life.

The following day, she was buried in the Montparnasse cemetery. In 1957, her concession was recovered by the town hall. Her remains were later moved to the ossuary of the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
