Thomas Jones Barker
Dimenzije reprodukcije
Born in Bath, United Kingdom, Thomas Jones Barker was born into a family of artists. His grandfather, Benjamin Barker, was an enamel painter and expert at painting sporting and animal figures, while his father, Thomas Barker, was a prominent painter. Barker’s artistic journey took him to Paris in 1834, where he studied under Horace Vernet. During his time in France, he became a frequent exhibitor at the annual Paris Salon, showing twenty-eight paintings between 1836 and 1850. His work earned him significant recognition, including a bronze medal at the Paris Salon of 1836 and the Cross of the Legion of Honour, conferred by King Louis Philippe I following two royal commissions.
Barker achieved notable success as a military painter, focusing on both historical and contemporary conflicts. His repertoire included scenes from the Napoleonic Wars and observations of the Franco-Prussian War. He was known for creating large-scale panoramic images featuring numerous figures, often based on actual portraits. Beyond the battlefield, he was a portrait painter of notable figures and specialized in large gatherings of officials and celebrities. His most discussed work, The Secret of England's Greatness, depicts Queen Victoria presenting a Bible to an African ambassador in the Audience Chamber at Windsor. Barker died in London at the age of 68.
