Around 975, with the fall of the Southern Tang dynasty to the rising Song empire, Chu-jan found himself swept up in a wave of relocation—a court painter accompanying the deposed Emperor Li Yu to the new capital city of Bianjing (modern Kaifeng). This move proved pivotal, exposing him to northern landscape styles and setting the stage for his emergence as one of the “Four Masters” of Song dynasty painting.
