Sharif became not only a mentor but also a close friend, guiding Kazem through the complexities of artistic thought and practice. This relationship proved crucial, providing a framework for challenging conventional norms and embracing experimental approaches. Kazem formally studied painting at Emirates Fine Arts Society, graduating in 1987, before pursuing an MFA in Fine Arts at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia (2012). He was among the five conceptual artists—along with Hassan Sharif, Hussain Sharif, Abdullah Al Saadi, and Mohammed Ahmed Ibrahim—recognized collectively in the 2002 exhibition “5 UAE” at the Ludwig Museum in Aachen, Germany. This marked a pivotal moment for Emirati art, bringing it to the attention of a wider global audience. Kazem’s work has been exhibited extensively worldwide, including participation in prestigious events such as the Havana Biennial (2000), the Singapore Biennial (2006), the Venice Biennale (2013) representing the UAE, and more recently at the Lyon Biennale (2022). His pieces are held in prominent collections like the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha, the Sharjah Art Museum, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.
