A Pioneer of Canadian Modernism
Lowrie Warrener was a Canadian painter who emerged as a pioneer of modernism. His artistic journey began after meeting Arthur Lismer at a 1920 exhibition in Sarnia, Canada. Seeking to further his education in sculpture and painting, he moved to Toronto to attend the Ontario College of Art. His formal training eventually led him to Europe, where he studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp and worked at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.
Warrener's approach to composition was deeply influenced by his reading of Clive Bell's Art, which emphasized the necessity of strong, three-dimensional design. He believed in using figures as design elements and prioritizing the shape suggested by color over naturalism. This philosophy manifested in a decorative landscape style characterized by:
Evolution of Form and Style
The work of Lowrie Warrener underwent significant stylistic shifts. In the mid-1920s, his paintings embraced a flat-patterned, decorative approach. By the period between 1925 and 1930, his work became more abstracted, characterized by dark, simplified, and blocky semi-geometric shapes. He described his own process during this time as creating an "abstract impression of color," where he chose colors he liked to fill space.
Beyond the canvas, Warrener explored the intersection of different art forms by working as a set designer for avant-garde theatre. His creative output was recognized through various exhibitions, including a 1926 show at the Sarnia Carnegie Library and a contribution to the Group of Seven's 1926 exhibition. His legacy is preserved in several public collections, including the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.
