Spring
Velikost reprodukcije
Spring is an oil on canvas by the French painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The artist, born in 1825, was a central figure in the academic tradition of nineteenth-century France. His technical approach emphasized anatomical precision and a luminous treatment of skin tones, qualities evident in this work.
The painting, also known as Le Printemps or The Return of Spring, was executed in 1886. It represents a significant period in Bouguereau's career, during which he frequently engaged with mythological and allegorical themes through the lens of classical realism. The work is currently held in the collection of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska.
The central figure is a woman positioned at the heart of the composition, cradling two children in her arms. This maternal grouping forms the focal point of the scene, anchored by the physical connection between the woman and the infants. The arrangement creates a sense of stability and quietude within the frame.
Surrounding this central triad, several angels populate the space. In the background, these figures are distributed in various states of repose; some stand while others sit or lie down, creating a sense of depth through their staggered placement. The setting is an outdoor environment, with a grassy area visible beneath the figures, grounding the celestial subjects in a natural landscape. The interaction of these elements produces a serene and peaceful atmosphere, capturing a moment of stillness.
The work was first presented to the public at the Salon in Paris in 1886, appearing as entry number 306. Following its debut in France, the painting traveled to the United States, where it was included in the Omaha Art Exhibition Associated First Annual Exhibition in 1890, listed as number 198.
The provenance of the canvas is linked to the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. It was featured in the Joslyn Memorial, held in Omaha from January 8 to March 12, 1934. The painting was later part of a significant retrospective exhibition, William Bouguereau, 1825–1905, at the Musée du Petit-Palais in Paris between February 9 and May 6, 1984.
The painting is held in the permanent collection of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. It remains a significant part of the museum's holdings, allowing for public viewing within its curated galleries.
The acquisition of this work is tied to the generosity of Francis T. B. Martin. According to the museum's credit line, the piece was a gift from Martin to his nephew, Francis T. B. Martin (1904–1995). This lineage of stewardship has ensured the work's presence in the Omaha collection.
