Opis digitalnega artefakta

Rudolf Bartels zählt zu den bedeutendsten Malern Mecklenburgs. Er arbeitete zurückgezogen und von den europäischen Kunstzentren unbeachtet in Schwaan. Seit etwa 1860 hatten Künstler wie Otto Dörr (1831 – 1868), Eduard Ehrke (1837 – 1911) und Carl Malchin (1838 – 1923) die Landschaft um Schwaan als Motiv entdeckt. Durch Franz Bunke (1857 – 1939) entwickelte sich der Ort zur wirklichen Künstlerkolonie. Ab 1892 hielt sich der in Schwaan geborene Künstler vom Frühjahr bis zum Herbst in der Künstlerkolonie auf und brachte zahlreiche seiner Weimarer Schüler und Kollegen mit. Rudolf Bartels erhielt hier von Bunke seine erste Ausbildung, bevor er in Weimar studierte. Bartels Begeisterung für die Weite der mecklenburgischen Flusslandschaft drückt sich in seinen zahlreichen Landschaftsbildern und Darstellungen dörflicher Szenen aus. Vor allem seine später entstandenen Gemälde zeugen von einer, für die Entwicklung der europäischen Moderne typischen Unabhängigkeit der Farbe gegenüber dem Motiv und zeichnen sich durch einen kräftigen Pinselduktus, einen flächigen Bildaufbau und leuchtende Farben aus. Die Landschaft mit Baum vermittelt dem Betrachter eine lebensbejahende Aufbruchsstimmung. Der strahlende Sonnenschein, die feuerroten Blüten am Baum und das kräftig grüne Gras zeigen eine derartige Leuchtkraft, dass sie dem Betrachter förmlich entgegenspringen. Rudolf Bartels beschränkte sich in seinen Landschaftsbildern auf die Darstellung weniger Elemente und verzichtete auf eine illusionistische Rauminszenierung. Die Grenze zur Abstraktion überschritt der Künstler jedoch nie: „Ich wollte steigern, was ich in der Natur sah, es sollte werden wie das Ideal, was ich seit Kindertagen in mir trage, sollte leuchten und glänzen wie Edelsteine …“ (Rudolf Bartels 1931)
