Opis digitalnega artefakta

This is a plate in the shape of gujeolpan (platter of nine delicacies) produced using the dry lacquer technique consists of hemp cloth, mud powder, lacquer, and mother-of-pearl. Mother-of-pearl inlay was applied only to the outer rim of the flower petal-shaped design. This work shows a traditional sense of beauty and can be used in many different ways. Created by Kwon Youngjin, who officially inherited the skills of Korea’s Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 113 Chiljang (lacquer work), this piece is part of the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation’s collection. The coaster, which is completed with lacquer on hemp cloth, is a work by Sui Atelier.

Biografija umetnika

A Sculptor of Contradictions: The World of Kwon Youngjin

Kwon Youngjin emerges as a compelling figure in contemporary Korean sculpture, an artist whose work resonates with the complex interplay between tradition and innovation. Currently an assistant professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), his artistic practice is surprisingly interwoven with a rigorous academic background focused on operating systems, emerging storage technologies, and system security. This unique confluence of disciplines—the tangible world of form and material alongside the abstract realm of digital information—infuses his sculptures with a distinctive intellectual depth. While biographical details remain somewhat sparse, it’s clear that Kwon isn't simply *making* objects; he is exploring fundamental questions about existence, difference, and the boundaries between life and death through meticulously crafted forms. His research background suggests an interest in systems, structures, and the underlying order of things, which translates powerfully into his artistic vision.

Early Influences and Artistic Development

Kwon Youngjin’s journey to becoming a prominent sculptor appears rooted in a deep engagement with Korean history and culture, specifically its past traumas and future aspirations. His work frequently references the DMZ Project Art, hinting at an exploration of division, memory, and reconciliation. The choice of materials is also significant; Kwon often works with white as a central element, imbuing it with symbolic weight—a color representing both purity and emptiness, life and death. This fascination with “albinism” as a motif isn’t merely aesthetic but serves as a powerful metaphor for individuality and the beauty found in difference. The artist's statement reveals a desire to express what lies *beyond* conventional perceptions of normalcy, delving into the complexities of identity and belonging. His early studies likely involved mastering traditional sculptural techniques before venturing into more abstract and conceptual territories.

Themes and Techniques: A Dialogue Between Opposites

The core of Kwon Youngjin’s artistic practice lies in a compelling dialogue between opposing forces. He masterfully juxtaposes contrasting textures, forms that appear both fragile and resilient, creating sculptures that evoke a sense of tension and harmony. The artist's work is characterized by an elegant simplicity, often employing minimalist aesthetics to amplify the emotional impact of his chosen materials. His exploration of “albinism” extends beyond visual representation; it’s a conceptual framework for understanding the inherent contradictions within existence. He places seemingly disparate elements together—subjects that are similar yet different—to highlight the boundaries between life and death, silence and expression. The use of white is particularly striking, acting as both a canvas and a symbol of infinite possibility. Kwon's sculptures aren’t static objects but dynamic representations of internal struggles and philosophical inquiries.

Major Achievements and Recognition

While comprehensive documentation of his exhibition history remains limited, Kwon Youngjin has steadily gained recognition within the Korean art scene and beyond. His affiliation with institutions like KAIST and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota demonstrates a unique position bridging academia and artistic creation. The artist’s work is featured on platforms such as WahooArt, indicating an increasing international presence. The DMZ Project Art serves as a significant achievement, showcasing his ability to engage with politically charged themes in a nuanced and thought-provoking manner. His sculptures have been described as innovative and reflective of Korea's evolving identity, attracting attention from collectors and critics alike.

Historical Significance and Future Trajectory

Kwon Youngjin’s contribution to contemporary Korean art lies in his ability to synthesize intellectual rigor with emotional depth. He represents a new generation of artists who are unafraid to explore complex themes through unconventional means. His work challenges traditional notions of beauty and identity, prompting viewers to question their own perceptions of the world around them. The artist's unique background—a blend of technological expertise and artistic sensibility—positions him as a significant voice in the ongoing dialogue between art, science, and society. As he continues to develop his practice, Kwon Youngjin is poised to become an increasingly influential figure, shaping the future landscape of Korean sculpture and inspiring artists across disciplines.
