“Sculpture no. 15” was presented by Melotti in his first personal exhibition, held in May 1935 at the Milione gallery in Milan. On that occasion, the artist from Rovereto exhibited his recent abstract research: work that was a synthesis of precision, geometry and influences from the artist’s musical background and ancient Mediterranean roots. There is no trace of modelling or evocation in his geometry; the geometry is a body and a solid body, but it is open to the constitutive effusions of tension and time. “Sculpture no. 15” is based on a “contrapunctual and harmonious precision”. Three vertical modules give rhythm to the space, finding a moment of synthesis in the undulating motif that passes over them and unites them. These diaphanous and dematerialised bodies stand out in a silent and motionless spatio-temporal situation. The result is a composition of great clarity, and of pure and absolute forms, in which geometry meets poetry to re-establish a new modern plastic art.
