The Life of Pieter van Bronckhorst
Pieter Anthonisz van Bronckhorst was a Dutch painter active in Delft. Born in Delft to Anthonis Pieters, a tailor, and Machteld Dirxdr. van Coolwijk, he likely studied painting in his home city. During his youth, he visited France to study perspective painting and had returned by 1609. He was a co-founder of the Guild of Saint Luke of Delft in 1613 and served as its headman from 1655 to 1656.
In 1614, he married Jacobmina Nicolaesdr. de Grebber in Delft. The couple had three children: Machtelijna Pieters, Claes Pietersz., and Maria. His son, Claes Pietersz., also became a painter. Van Bronckhorst died in Delft and was buried in the Nieuwe Kerk.
Artistic Focus and Works
Van Bronckhorst was mainly an architectural painter known for his church interiors and fantasy palaces featuring small figures representing biblical stories. He used the entwined monogram PVB to sign his works. His paintings included:
- Interiors of churches, temples, and palaces ornamented with historical subjects.
- Two large pictures for the City Hall of Delft: the Christ driving the Money-changers out of the Temple and the Judgment of Solomon.
The Judgment of Solomon, painted in 1620 or 1622 on commission from the Vierschaar, depicts a biblical scene set in a sumptuous Renaissance palace. Additionally, he may have practiced as a still life painter, as evidenced by a fish still life signed P. van Bronchorst, and he may have painted staffage for landscape painters such as Pieter Stael.
