The Artistic Journey of Nancy Mitchnick
Born in 1947 in Detroit, Michigan, Nancy Mitchnick has established herself as a significant American painter and educator. Her academic foundation began at Wayne State University, where she earned a BFA and later pursued graduate studies. Before her career as a painter took full flight, she served as a curatorial assistant at the Detroit Institute of Arts. However, following advice to embrace painting, she transitioned into a dedicated practice. Her work gained national recognition through the 1980 "Kick Out the Jams" group show at the Detroit Institute of Arts, which highlighted the energetic handling of materials and thick stripes of pigment characteristic of her portraits.
