Early Life and Artistic Training
Moritz von Beckerath was born on 2 May 1838 in Krefeld, Germany. His early years in this German town preceded a long period of formal study that would shape his hand. By 1854, he had entered the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf to begin his training. This period of instruction was marked by the presence of several distinct influences. He studied under Joseph Kehren and Moritz von Schwind, among others. His education was shaped by the specific techniques passed down by Emanuel Leutze, Eduard Bendemann, Karl Ferdinand Sohn, and Karl Müller.
The halls of the academy provided the foundation for his development as a painter. He spent his formative years absorbing the methods of his teachers, moving through the structured curriculum of the Düsseldorf school of painting. This training was not merely about the application of pigment, but about learning the discipline required to capture history and narrative through a brush. His time in Düsseldorf established the technical groundwork he would carry with him as he moved toward his later years in Munich.
Activity in Munich
In 1859, he moved to Munich, leaving behind his studies in Düsseldorf. His early years in the city were spent working briefly under Moritz von Schwind. This period of association provided a foundation before he began to establish himself on his own terms. He eventually transitioned into working as an independent artist, navigating the local art scene through his own practice.
His presence in Munich remained constant for decades. He settled into the rhythms of the city, focusing on his painting and various illustrations. He continued his work in this environment until his death in Munich on 17 September 1896.
Notable Paintings and Illustrations
His brushwork often turned toward the weight of history and the quietude of a moment. In 1873, he painted Wittekind calls the Saxons to fight, a work held in Krefeld at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Around 1870, he produced Alarich's burial in the Busento, which is kept in the Schack-Galerie in Munich. He also worked on a piece titled Sleeping reveler. These paintings show a focus on specific, heavy scenes from the past.
Beyond large canvases, his hand appeared frequently in printed collections and series. He contributed to the Ballad wreath in 1866 and provided illustrations for the Düsseldorf picture portfolio that same year. His work also appears in the Münchener Bilderbogen. These smaller, more frequent tasks required a different kind of precision, moving between the grand scale of history and the detailed requirements of print.
The artist also spent time illustrating stories for the Deutsche Bilderbogen für Jung und Alt. For this series, he created the images for König Drosselbart and Ach wenn mir's nur gruselte. These illustrations required him to translate narrative into visual form, capturing the specific moods of the tales through line and shape.
