Early Successes: Watercolours, Miniatures & The Life of an Actor

Lane initially gained recognition as a painter of delicate water-colour portraits and miniatures, exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1819, 1820, and again in 1826. Around 1825, Lane embarked on a project that would significantly elevate his profile: *The Life of an Actor*, a series of thirty-six designs brought to life through letterpress penned by the prolific Pierce Egan—the celebrated author known for *Life in London*.
