Born in Nauders, Austria, to a peasant family, Karl von Blaas initially received an education as a writer in Innsbruck. However, his true passion lay in the visual arts. Seeking a deeper education, he traveled to Venice in 1832, supported by his uncle. During his time at the Venice Academy, he studied under Lodovico Lipparini and eventually received the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to spend five years studying in Rome. While in Italy, he traveled extensively, studying and copying many old master paintings.
His artistic journey took him across Europe, including studies in Munich and commissions for churches in Paris, London, Hungary, and Russia. He was appointed to the Academy of Vienna in 1850 and later served as a professor at the Venice Academy from 1856 to 1866. In his later years, he returned to Vienna, where he spent eleven years executing forty two-fresco paintings for the Vienna Arsenal. He died in Vienna.
Karl von Blaas was a painter known for his portraits and religious compositions, executing his works on canvas as well as in the form of frescoes.
