Born on March 31, 1979, in Singapore, Prabal Gurung spent his formative years in Kathmandu, Nepal. This upbringing profoundly influenced his aesthetic sensibility, imbuing his designs with a rich cultural heritage and vibrant color palette. He began his design journey in New Delhi before relocating to New York City to pursue formal education at Parsons The New School for Design.
After graduating from Parsons, Gurung honed his skills with experience at Cynthia Rowley’s design and production teams. A pivotal moment came when he was appointed Director of Design at the iconic Bill Blass, a position he held for five years. This role provided invaluable experience in luxury fashion and laid the groundwork for launching his own eponymous label.
In 2009, Prabal Gurung launched his self-titled collection. His designs quickly gained recognition for their quality, innovation, and a unique blend of modern luxury with bold colors and feminine silhouettes. A commitment to craftsmanship and attention to detail became hallmarks of the brand.
Prabal Gurung’s work is deeply rooted in his Nepalese heritage, drawing inspiration from its art, textiles, and landscapes. He also cites a fascination with strong, independent women as a key influence. His designs often reflect a celebration of femininity, strength, and cultural diversity. The designer blends traditional techniques with contemporary aesthetics.
Beyond awards, Gurung has undertaken significant collaborations, including a successful partnership with Target in 2013, MAC Cosmetics in 2014, TOMS to support the Shikshya Foundation Nepal in 2016, and Lane Bryant in 2017. He also served as Global Creative Director of Tasaki.
Prabal Gurung’s impact extends beyond the runway. His designs have been worn by influential figures such as Michelle Obama and The Duchess of Cambridge, elevating his profile and solidifying his position in the fashion world.
