Designer Mothusi Lesolle of iZAURA from Botswana exchanged with artisans Quazi Design from Swaziland to create a bespoke look for The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange - an initiative for established and emerging fashion talent from across the Commonwealth’s 53 countries to showcase the power and potential of artisan fashion skills to deliver new networks, trade links and highlight sustainability. Mothusi Lesolle of Botswana and Doron Shaltiel of Swaziland collaborated on a design that symbolised principles important to both countries: The white linen fabric represents purity, an expectation of young women in Swaziland. The red recycled paper beads raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, while the black beads signify the power in the culture of the people of Swaziland and pay tribute to the power of women. The corset is in the shape of a shield, and symbolises the protection afforded to the Commonwealth by the Queen. The look was displayed at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission, London. Both exhibitions were curated by VOGUE

Mothusi Lesolle: Bridging Tradition and Innovation in Botswana Fashion

Mothusi Lesolle’s journey into the world of fashion began not as a calculated ambition but as an innate fascination with textiles and storytelling—a passion rooted deeply within his Botswanan heritage. Born in Botswana, Lesolle's formative years were spent absorbing the vibrant colors and intricate patterns of Makgotla cloth weaving, traditions passed down through generations that celebrate community and artistic expression. This early exposure instilled a profound respect for cultural heritage and fueled his determination to elevate Botswana’s creative landscape.
  • Early Influences: Lesolle cites Swazi artisans Doron Shaltiel as pivotal collaborators in shaping his vision, recognizing the importance of intercultural exchange and sustainable practices. Their partnership exemplifies a commitment to honoring both local traditions and global trends.
  • The Birth of iZAURA: Recognizing the potential for commercializing Botswana’s cultural heritage, Lesolle founded iZAURA – an atelier dedicated to transforming traditional crafts into contemporary fashion designs. This initiative serves as a testament to his belief in empowering African creatives and redefining beauty standards.

A Collaborative Vision: The Commonwealth Fashion Exchange Project

Lesolle’s dedication to fostering artistic dialogue extended beyond collaborative projects; it culminated in the prestigious Commonwealth Fashion Exchange, spearheaded by Vogue Editor-at-Large Hamish Bowles. This groundbreaking endeavor brought together designers from across the Commonwealth nations—Botswana and Swaziland among them—to showcase the transformative power of artisan fashion skills. The project’s symbolism – a white linen fabric representing purity alongside red recycled paper beads highlighting HIV/AIDS awareness – underscored Lesolle's commitment to communicating important values through design.
  • Symbolism & Representation: The corset, modeled after a shield, symbolized protection and honored the legacy of Queen Elizabeth II, reflecting Lesolle’s appreciation for history and cultural heritage.
  • Exhibition Recognition: Exhibitions at Buckingham Palace and the Australian High Commission cemented Lesolle's reputation as a visionary artist who champions sustainability and celebrates diversity.

Sustainable Style & Decolonizing Fashion

Lesolle’s philosophy transcends mere aesthetics; it embodies a broader movement toward “decolonizing fashion”—challenging Western dominance in the industry and advocating for African voices to shape global trends. He firmly believes that embracing indigenous techniques and materials is crucial for creating truly meaningful designs, fostering economic empowerment within communities, and redefining notions of beauty.
  • Technique & Material Focus: Lesolle champions the use of locally sourced textiles—particularly Makgotla cloth—emphasizing craftsmanship and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Social Impact Advocacy: Through his atelier iZAURA and his educational initiatives, Lesolle strives to empower young creatives in Botswana and beyond, fostering a new generation of designers committed to ethical practices and cultural preservation.

Recognition & Future Horizons

Lesolle’s work has garnered considerable acclaim within the fashion world and beyond. Featured prominently in publications like The Mail on Sunday Standard, he continues to inspire aspiring artists and solidify Botswana's position as a hub for innovative cultural expression. As Lesolle looks ahead, his ambition remains steadfast: to propel African fashion into the spotlight and champion a future where creativity flourishes alongside responsibility—a legacy destined to resonate far beyond the borders of Botswana.
