This academic foundation prepared him for his ordination in 1926, leading him to serve various rabbinic posts in Bingen, Frankfurt an der Oder, and Berlin-Wilmersdorf.
The stability of his early career was shattered by the rise of the Nazi regime. In 1935, Maybaum faced the terrifying reality of persecution when he was arrested by the Gestapo, spending six weeks in the Columbia prison camp. This period of imprisonment and the subsequent loss of his mother and sisters to the Holocaust left an indelible mark on his soul and his writing. Seeking refuge from the growing darkness in Germany, he emigrated to London in 1939, carrying with him a heavy burden of grief and a need to find meaning within the catastrophe.
In the quietude of London, Maybaum turned his intellect toward explaining the inexplicable. He became a voice for understanding the immense suffering of his people through a theological lens.
