In the photographs of Armin Linke architectural space emphasises the problematic relationship between man and landscape. Linke has created a project to “catalogue the visible”, a sort of archive of human activities, landscapes and cultures that reveals to what degree the anthropisation of the planet influences our psychic perception. The examination of the Alpine landscape initiated by Linke precisely with a series realised for the MAXXI – acknowledged during the 2004 Venice Biennale – confronts the theme of natural and artificial flows involving the entire Alpine ridge. An area of passage and trade since prehistoric times, the territory of the Alps was radically changed by the construction of the first transalpine railways that brought the mountains into contact, and cultural, ecological and economic competition, with the city and the plains. This marked the beginning of the Alpine paradox: the excessive exploitation of an environment that risks destroying what it should instead be protecting.

Životopis umelca

Armin Linke: Architect of Perception

Born in Milan, Italy, in 1966, Armin Linke’s artistic journey is a fascinating exploration of the intricate relationship between architecture, technology, and society. His work isn't merely documentation; it’s an interrogation – a deliberate questioning of how we perceive space, design, and our own place within the built world. From his early explorations in architecture and theatre to his current focus on photography and film, Linke consistently seeks to deconstruct conventional narratives and expose the hidden structures underpinning our visual experiences.

Initially drawn to the unity of time and space inherent in theatrical design, Linke’s artistic trajectory shifted towards documenting the evolving landscape of human interaction with the environment. This transition was profoundly influenced by a pivotal moment – reading about the construction of the Three Gorges Dam in China – which sparked a deep interest in the broader implications of large-scale engineering projects and their impact on global communities. This early engagement laid the groundwork for his later explorations into the Anthropocene, long before the term gained widespread recognition within the art world.

A Collaborative Practice: Shaping Environments

Linke’s artistic process is fundamentally collaborative. He doesn't operate in isolation; instead, he actively seeks out partnerships with scientists, editors, sound designers, and a diverse range of specialists – including historians, philosophers, and even marine biologists. This interdisciplinary approach is central to his work, allowing him to move beyond purely aesthetic considerations and delve into the complex socio-political contexts that shape our environments. His projects often blur the lines between fiction and reality, offering nuanced perspectives on global issues such as climate change, technological advancement, and geopolitical dynamics.

Significant collaborations include “Prospecting Ocean,” a three-year research project undertaken in conjunction with the Institute of Marine Sciences of the National Research Council of Italy. This ambitious undertaking investigated the state of health of our oceans while simultaneously examining how remote-controlled underwater mapping technology is being utilized for seabed colonization – a potent commentary on humanity’s expanding reach and its potential consequences.

Major Exhibitions and Recognition

Armin Linke's work has garnered international recognition through numerous solo and group exhibitions. Key milestones include the special prize at the 2004 Venice Biennale of Architecture and Image Capital, awarded in 2019 for his project “Image Capital,” a collaborative exploration of photography’s role in the digital age. His photographic works have been featured prominently in institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation in Eschborn/Frankfurt, and the Museum Folkwang in Essen.

Recent solo exhibitions showcase his evolving practice: “Image Capital” (with Estelle Blaschke), Centre Pompidou, Paris; “Earth Indices. Processing the Anthropocene” (with Giulia Bruno), HKW Berlin; “Blind Sensorium,” Matadero, Madrid; and “Museo Archeologico Nazionale Domenico Ridola, Matera ECoC 2019.” These exhibitions demonstrate a sustained commitment to challenging conventional photographic practices and revealing the underlying structures of design strategies.

Current Focus & Academic Pursuits

Currently based in Berlin, Linke continues to push the boundaries of his artistic practice. He holds a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich (AdBK), serves as a guest professor at ISIA Urbino, and is currently an artist-in-residence at CERN Geneva. His academic roles underscore a commitment to fostering dialogue between art, science, and education – reflecting a belief that these disciplines are increasingly intertwined in shaping our understanding of the world.

Beyond his current projects, Linke’s work consistently engages with themes of space, design, and human interaction. He remains dedicated to questioning established norms and prompting viewers to reconsider their relationship with the built environment – a mission reflected in his ongoing exploration of architecture, technology, and society through photography and film.
