Narodený v Paisley v Spojenom kráľovstve, William Hart emigroval so svojou rodinou do Spojených štátov v roku 1831, kde si nakoniec našiel domov v Albany, New York. Jeho raná umelecká cesta sa začala ako učeň dekoratívneho maliara v Albany a Troyi, kde získal prvé skúsenosti s dekorovaním panelov kočiarov krajinami. Po období, ktoré strávil ako portrétny maliar a po nezdaľom pokuse o získanie zakázok v stredozápadných štátoch, Hart v roku 1848 vystavoval svoje prvé dielo v Národnej akadémii dizajnu.
