The Path from Solingen to Munich
Born in Solingen, Germany, Robert Engels began his life as the son of a steel goods dealer. His early years were shaped by the expectation of taking over the family business, a path he eventually left behind after his father passed away in 1885. Instead of the trade of steel, he sought the studios of the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He studied there under instructors such as Hugo Crola and Johann Peter Theodor Janssen, refining a hand that was as comfortable with a lithograph as it was with a brush. His training was not confined to a single classroom; he spent time in France, Belgium, and England, absorbing the visual languages of the continent before settling into the creative pulse of Munich.
His presence in Munich was marked by a transition from student to teacher. In 1898, he accepted a position at the Königliche Kunstgewerbeschule, a role that would define much of his professional life. It was within these academic walls that he met Gustava von Veith, a student who would later become his wife. By 1910, his influence had grown enough to earn him the title of Professor. He became a member of the Deutscher Werkbund, a group that reflected his commitment to the intersection of design and craft.
A Hand for Many Mediums
Engels did not limit himself to a single way of seeing. His work moved between the delicate precision of illustration and the heavy requirements of architectural design. He was a man of many roles, often working across different disciplines to fulfill a single vision. His output included:
- Lithography and graphic art
- Stained glass window design
- Stage painting and scenography for theatres in Munich and Leipzig
- Decorative prints and illustrations for literature
- Mural work and church window commissions
His hands were active in many spaces, from the quiet pages of the magazine Jugend to the large-scale windows of churches in Breslau. He even provided compositions to illustrate Joseph Bedier's rendition of Tristan and Iseult. Whether he was designing for a stage or working on a commission for the Krupp family, his focus remained on the practical application of art to life.
Legacy and the Passing of an Estate
The work of Engels left a mark on the students he taught, including Franz Kolbrand and Otto Michael Schmitt. His life in Munich was deeply intertwined with the artistic community, including the colony at Schondorf. After his death in 1926, his widow, Gustava, took care of his remaining artistic estate. In 1934, she made a significant gesture by donating large portions of his work to the Robert Engels Memorial Foundation, which was established by the city of Solingen. This ensured that the traces of his life—his sketches, his designs, and his prints—remained part of the public record, with the remainder of his estate eventually passing to Solingen following her death in 1970.
