A life shaped by the landscape

Otto Viktor Frölicher began his days in Solothurn, where his father held a position within the local government. His path toward the canvas led him to Munich in 1859, when he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts. There, he sat under the guidance of Johann Gottfried Steffan, learning the quiet discipline required for landscape painting. The movement of his life later took him to Düsseldorf, where the work of Oswald Achenbach left its mark on his developing eye.

He returned briefly to Solothurn, but found that the local scene offered little room for a painter to sustain himself. This necessity pulled him back to Munich. In this city, he encountered the influence of Adolf Heinrich Lier. In 1876, following a recommendation from Lier, he traveled to Paris. The scale and pace of the large city did not suit him, and within a year, he had returned to the more familiar surroundings of Munich.

The weight of the brush

Frölicher’s work often focused on the textures of the natural world. His hands worked with oil on canvas and paper, capturing scenes such as Bergbach mit Gewitterstimmung or the rocky terrain found in Paysage rocheux. He was a man deeply connected to the artist communities of his time. He held several positions within major associations and acted as a judge for exhibitions at the Glaspalast. His commitment to his peers was evident in his role as chairman of an organization dedicated to Swiss artists living in Munich.

The later years were marked by physical decline. At thirty-nine, a bout with diphtheria left him in a state of permanent ill-health. Later, a diagnosis of cancer followed. Some contemporary accounts mention a disease contracted while he was out painting in the wild, which eventually led to jaundice. He passed away in Munich in 1890.
