The Belgian Canvas
The story of Cornelis Bender begins in Maaseik, Belgium. Born in 1886, he enters a landscape shaped by the shifting currents of European art. He moves through the world not as a mere observer, but as a painter, translating the visual reality of his surroundings into pigment. His life follows a trajectory through the Belgian provinces, eventually finding its end in Ekeren in 1964.
His identity is tied to the act of creation. Known also as Corneille Bender, he occupies a space within the Flemish tradition, a lineage of painters who sought to capture the essence of their era through the medium of oil and brush.
